OUR STORY

MISSION

Develop the global standard for responsible cashmere through the empowerment of nomadic herding cultures.

WHY MONGOLIA

“Herders always want to protect their grasslands, but we don’t always know how. The grasslands are very special to us, and we want to keep our herding culture alive for our children’s children and beyond. We just want their lives to be normal.”  - Munkjargal (Herder for over 40 years)

“Herders always want to protect their grasslands, but we don’t always know how. The grasslands are very special to us, and we want to keep our herding culture alive for our children’s children and beyond. We just want their lives to be normal.”

- Munkjargal (Herder for over 40 years)

Mongolia contains the largest intact grassland in the world. With a population of just under three million people, Mongolia is also the 18th largest country by land mass, making it the least densely populated country in the world.  Moreover, with 25-30 million goats that provide for over one-third of the livelihood to Mongolians, it’s no wonder that approximately ninety-five percent of all commercially harvested cashmere fiber globally comes from both Inner Mongolia and Outer Mongolia.

In the last two decades, however, the demand for cashmere products, primarily from western markets, has exponentially grown. Additionally, herders have historically been compensated for the quality of cashmere produced, whereas today they are compensated for the quantity of cashmere produced to meet market demands for cashmere products. This has led to herders increasing the number of goats in their herds, ultimately disrupting livestock herding ratios and placing added stress from overgrazing on the grassland ecosystem.

Currently, NOYA Fiber is sourced only from the Toson Khulstai reserve in Mongolia—a million plus acre reserve (larger than the State of Rhode Island) in the heart of the Eastern Steppe of Mongolia’s grasslands. Toson Khulstai is about a 20 hour automobile ride along an unfinished road from Ulaanbaatar—Mongolia’s capital and most populous city.
